Tools To Help You Design A Room

Sleep Outside

Designer Jamie Durie created his first-ever outdoor bedroom — in his own backyard. Jamie used Wooly Pockets to enclose the space with orchid-filled living walls. Hanging egg chairs provide a cozy nook for reading, while the mattress is the ideal spot for an afternoon nap.

Bohemian Outdoor Living Room

Emily Henderson transformed a plain patio to create this functional outdoor room with a collected, bohemian vibe. Best of all? She did it on a budget, with DIY planters, stumps-turned-cocktail-tables and more. Get her tips to create this look at home.

Mediterranean Oasis

This outdoor space mixes formal details you might see in an Old World garden with modern, casual touches. Designer Molly Wood placed a Spanish-inspired central fountain in the heart of the space, while the vine-covered pergola provides ample shade. Tour the rest of this amazing outdoor room.

On Top of the World

An Outdoor Home With History

Lush and enchanting, this Victorian-inspired space feels like it's been here almost as long as the 19th-century home it's a part of. This fireplace is the heart of the outdoor living room, with soft hammocks in front for lazy lounging. Designer Heather Lenkin used a muted gray arbor to define the space. Below, ornamental lettuces and succulents between the stairs provide an unexpected focal point. Tour the entire outdoor space now.

Relax and Energize

A stepped display for the owner's collection of bonsai trees serves as both a focal point and a wall for this Japanese-inspired dining pavilion. Yellow chrome chairs add energy and a modern twist to this global-chic space. Design by Jamie Durie

Going Graphic

Who says bold patterns and outdoor spaces can't mix? This poolside cabana in Beverly Hills has an indoors-out feel thanks to geometric wallpaper, bubbly furniture and unconventional accessories. A vine-covered roof brings an organic touch to the space. Image courtesy of Avalon Hotel Beverly Hills

An Outdoor Room Fit for a Star

Days of Our Lives star Deidre Hall's covered porch sports a shabby chic living area that's warm and inviting. Slipcovers unify the furniture, while a fireplace keeps the porch toasty year round. Featured on HGTV's Celebrities at Home

Bright and Modern

The design team on HGTV's Going Yard transformed a neglected backyard into this fun and functional living and dining space. A cedar bench doubles as storage for outdoor gear, and a tangerine canvas cover provides much-needed shade for the cozy dining area.

Landscape-Inspired Patio

This lavish Palm Springs patio featured on HGTV's Million Dollar Rooms draws inspiration from its surroundings. The curved roofline and sofa emulate the rise and fall of the mountain range, while the muted color scheme melds seamlessly with the view.

Elevate Your Garden

To ensure that this room's spectacular plantings took center stage, designer Jamie Durie brought them up to eye level using a lush living wall in place of a typical privacy fence. Nearby, an oversized iron planter houses a collection of multicolored succulents.

Zen Backyard

The Buddha is not only the focal point of this space, it's also designer Jamie Durie's source of inspiration for this relaxing, Asian-themed room. A hanging daybed provides a place for the family to lounge, while a nearby bench adds ample seating for visitors.

Outdoor Workspace

To create the dramatic arbor that shades this outdoor library and office space, designer Jamie Durie cut steel ribs into an arch shape and covered the steel with wooden slats. Curtains made from heavy outdoor fabric keep books dry in the rain.

A Gazebo Fit for Stargazing

The macrame "roof" on this backyard gazebo allows ample light to filter through. Look up and it's also a focal point, creating a unique "spider-web" pattern that's studded with lush hanging baskets.

Fit for a Party

Distinct living and dining spaces and lots of outdoor seating make this sleek Asian-inspired space perfect for outdoor soirees. Bamboo serves as a living divider to separate the two spaces. Design by Jamie Durie

African-Inspired Backyard

Elevating the seating area above the rest of the garden ensures guests will take notice. The freestanding fireplace is the focal point of the space, while the handmade mud-brick bench highlights the organic shape of the patio. Design by Jamie Durie; photo by Jason Busch

Take In the View

Designer Linda Woodrum created this entertainment deck to take full advantage of the breathtaking mountain views from the 2012 HGTV Dream Home. Muted colors complement rather than compete with the view, and the gas fire pit provides a dramatic focal point after dark.

Garden Romance

A patinaed metal arbor on one side and a thick patch of bamboo on the other transforms this concrete patio into a private outdoor room. Designer Sandy Koepke creates multi-tiered interest with outdoor chandeliers made from candles and hanging plants. Mismatched chairs and antique lanterns complete the romantic look. Modern and Minimal

The breathtaking design of this patio's roof is equal parts form and function: The open areas accommodate colorful shade cloths in the summer and allow light in throughout the winter. A simple fire pit is the centerpiece of the circular seating area. Design by Steve Appolloni

Eating Green

Inspired by a vertical garden in Atlanta, designer Jamie Durie created two living walls in this lush, green dining area. Jamie layered plant pockets filled with herbs, lettuces and more edible plants on green-stained slats to make the room look like one big living wall.
